5 things: Clare Elsaesser

I am so excited to share a new series here on the blog with you.  I have been working with some wonderfully creative people over the last few years, and have met so many of them through blogging and the interwebs, that I thought it might be fun to do an interview series and share it that same way with you.  So here we go.. to kick it off I asked one of my all time favorite artists Clare Elsaesser 5 things...

What did you want to be when you grew up?

I don't know if I ever had a concrete idea about this when I was really little, but by the time I was in junior high I kind of had an idea I wanted to be an artist of some type. I took my first photography class around this time, and loved it.

  Where do you find inspiration?

I find inspiration all over the place: the internet of course, books, daydreams, and movies. And I get a ton of inspiration and encouragement from studying the work of successful, established artists- my husband Kai (also a painter) and I are amassing a collection of big, fancy art books/watching our bank accounts dwindle.

Do you work from home?  Office?  Studio?

My studio is right next to my home, in a tiny little guest house. We are hoping to move shortly to a home where both Kai and I can have bigger studios. Right now I have stacks of paintings everywhere, and am constantly tripping over things!

Are you a City girl or a Country girl?

I am definitely a country girl! I grew up in LA, and went to college in Boston, and realized in my late twenties I am more and more happy the farther away I get from the hustle and bustle. I love open space, and spend most of my free time just spacing out, which is a lot easier to do when it is quiet and I am surrounded by nature, which I definitely am here, on the Sonoma coast.

What are you reading right now?

I am on a naturalist kick! I just finished reading A Lady's life in the Rocky Mountains by Isabella Bird, and am currently listening to a John Muir audio book, but not doing so well because I seem to fall asleep about five minutes in every night. John Muir is really compelling, but the narrator has such a soothing drawl it's like instant slumber when I press play!

Cement and Concrete tiles...

Lately these bold little numbers have been catching my eye.  We have been seeing them come up in projects here and there and have been loving the splash of color and creativity.  Most of these tiles are hand made to order and can be customized by color and pattern, which is perfect for those of us looking for something just outside the box.  Concrete and Cement tiles are said to be more durable than your standard ceramic tile and last for years to come.  They have been used across the globe both indoors and out.

Both products shown here are customizable and offered in a variety of standard colors.

Last year the home of Popham Design's owners was featured in Elle Decor.  I am sure if you saw it you would not have forgotten.  Loved these spaces!

Design inspiration {the musket room}

Just a short time ago I came across a photo of the this beautiful space and just last night I came upon another, only this time it had some additional information..  The Musket Room in Manhattan is gorgeous!  I am so excited to use this space as inspiration for a new commercial space I am starting on.  It is amazing with the use of texture and light.  Perfectly perfect if I don't say so myself!

Happy Monday my friends!

Adding a little color...

There is just something about textiles that I love..  vintage, new, colorful, textured you name it.  I pretty much love them all.  I am starting up a few new projects this week and I have been playing with fabric for the past few days.  I could not be happier!  I love how this simple space is transformed with the splashes of color each fabric adds in.  Perfection.

Jenny Andrews-Anderson artwork..

I have a thing for art.. all mediums and so many different styles.  I fell for Jenny's art over the summer and the feeling continues on today!  I love her pieces because they seem so alive and would bring a space to life so easily.  Bold beautiful colors mixed perfectly.  There are 2 pieces in my office that I need to frame and hang still and I cannot wait!  Check out some of her other pieces and grab one for yourself - you will love it...

Bold in black... 47 Park Avenue

I came across a single image from this gorgeous home on pinterest and fell hard!  This is such an inspiring space, and just one of many on Micheal's blog.   He covers their renovation in beautiful detail and the results are enough to make me want to paint everything black and white and add bold mixes of color.  It is beyond wonderful!

I love the pups too!  They also have an English bulldog that is not pictured here.. yes I may have stalked the blog a little!
